Science partnership

A strong foundation in science can affect a student's career path in a big way. Thanks to a partnership by Scott City schools and the St. Louis Science Center, more students are being challenged in areas of science, design and engineering.

This past summer, three representatives from the science center trained Scott City's elementary and middle school teachers on the science inquiry method. This fall teachers have been implementing this training in the classroom and the early results are encouraging.

Recently science center representatives were in Scott City for a family science night at the middle school. Students, ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade, along with their families viewed a portable planetarium and experiment exhibits from the science center.

Regardless of these students' career ambitions, science plays a critical role. Even in careers that are not necessarily science-based, students need to be able to think critically and make quality evaluations -- skills that a strong science background can help develop.

A job well done to the Scott City teachers and administrators as well as the science center for helping make this partnership work. We look forward to seeing how these young people progress in their education and beyond.
