SEMO 5k Fund Run Brings Young Talent

On October 29, 2011 Professor Beth Easter's sporting event management class hosted a 5k fund run to help raise money for the Sports Management endowed scholarship at Southeast Missouri State University. Over $600 were raised by runners and sponsors.

On a morning that followed the clinching of the World Series by the St. Louis Cardinals, there was still a great turnout. The field of nearly 40 runners ranged from Greek affiliated supporters to families. Although, there was one runner whom all spectators and participants took notice of.

His name is Coleman Erwin and he is a 13 year old athlete from Fredericktown, Missouri. Erwin completed the 5k run in just under 22 minutes which was the second best time overall, second only to OVC collegiate track and field runner Pat Yates.

Erwin attends Fredericktown Middle School and is an all-star athlete in multiple sports including football, basketball, baseball, and of course track and field. This was Erwin's ninth 5k run in which he set a personal best for himself with an impressive time of 21:55.

Kelly Erwin, Coleman's mother, was in attendance of the race and showed her support while her son crossed the finish line. She says she is his number one fan and will always be there to cheer her son on.
