Career fair

Though not at the alarming level as national unemployment figures, there are still many in Cape Girardeau County and elsewhere in the area looking for employment.

On Thursday, 986 people attended the Cape Girardeau Area Career Fair at the Osage Centre. The event, sponsored by the Workforce Investment Board of Southeast Missouri, city of Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce and Cape Girardeau Area Magnet, hosted 30 companies that met with prospective job candidates.

One of the companies was a call center that is considering setting up shop in Cape Girardeau. Should this come to fruition, the center could bring 500 jobs to town -- an economic boon to our community.

Though national economic news is concerning, Joe Rozier of Workforce Employment Solutions said the greater Cape Girardeau-Jackson area has "a very robust business model and has for the past 15 to 17 months."

We agree that the community has done a good job at weathering this prolonged economic storm, but there is always room for improvement. Hopefully the career fair helped those seeking part- or full-time employment find the right job for their skill sets.

Thanks to those who helped organize this event as well as the employers who participated.
