Cape Girardeau, Mo. -- Staff Sgt. Deron Hovis, of Headquarters Company, 1140th Engineer Battalion, was recently awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his exceptional meritorious service as the company's supply sergeant.

"His contributions are invaluable to the success of the unit," said Sgt. 1st Class Tyler King, readiness noncommissioned officer for the unit. "He's not only within the top 10 percent rating from the state examiner teams, but he consistently volunteers his time and expertise to other units' supply sergeants, making our entire battalion that much more efficient and stronger."

Hovis has also maintained accountability of his entire stock of equipment without any monetary losses and received high marks for environmental awareness and on-site safety, said King.

"Hovis is an extremely dedicated and skilled supply sergeant," said Maj. Craig Gatzemeyer, administrative officer for the battalion. "He's set a high standard for every full time Soldier and it gives me great pride to recognize his accomplishments."

Hovis received his award during a ceremony at the Cape Girardeau armory.

"It's an honor to be recognized," said Hovis, of Jackson. "But I want to thank everyone because it's not just one person, it takes a whole unit to make my job successful. I hope to continue to meet and reach beyond the standards set by my fellow Soldiers, my commander and my battalion."

Hovis is supported in his military career by his wife Lisa, and their children Caleb, 18, Tanner, 13, and Dalton, 12.
