Two children taken from scene by helicopter after U.S. 60 wreck

Sunday, August 7, 2011

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Two Sikeston children were airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital following an accident Thursday afternoon on U.S. 60 that also involved a Dexter, Mo., woman.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the children were riding in a vehicle driven by their mother, Kimberly D. Wheeler, 36, of Sikeston. The woman reportedly failed to yield as she was southbound on Route FF, crossing U.S. 60, three miles west of Sikeston in New Madrid County. The patrol states Wheeler's vehicle drove into the path of a westbound 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Renda K. Burton, 61, of Dexter, who sustained minor injuries.

Adley Wheeler, 3, and Aubrey Wheeler, 7, received serious injuries. Both children and both drivers were wearing safety devices at the time of the accident.

Kimberly Wheeler, the mother of two children, was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

The accident occurred at 3:15 p.m.
