Cape Junior Legion wins district tourney

The Cape Girardeau Plaza Tire Junior American Legion baseball team defeated Jackson twice Saturday to capture the district tournament title.

Marc Rivas knocked in Ramsey Scott and Thomas Crocetti with a double in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead Cape to the 4-3 win in the winner-take-all game.

Austin Caldwell and Aaron Grainger both scored once for Cape (13-17).

Nick Essner tossed a complete game to earn the win. He struck out five and didn't issue a walk.

Cape needed to beat Jackson earlier in the day to reach the winner-take-all contest.

Logan Henson went the distance on the mound. He struck out four and walked one in the 5-3 win.

Scott went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Justin Landewee went 2 for 4 in the win.

Cape advances to the zone tournament, which it hosts starting Thursday at Central High School. Jackson also qualified for the zone tournament because Cape is hosting it, which means the district gets two entrants this year.
