Eight killed on Mo. highways over holiday

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports eight people died on Missouri highways during the Fourth of July weekend counting period, two more than last year. The highway patrol worked 259 crashes with 130 injuries.

On the state's waterways, there were no fatalities in boating accidents. The patrol reports 10 boating accidents with five injuries.

Eugene Smith, 26, of Dyersburg, Tenn., drowned Saturday while trying to swim across the Current River near Van Buren, Mo.
