RASCALS Foundation Now Accepting Applications for Scholarship Awards

ST. LOUIS, June 30, 2011 -- The Robert A. Stehlin Campaign for ALS (RASCALS) is currently accepting applications and essays for the organization's new RASCALS Higher Education Scholarship Program. The awards were made possible by the RASCALS Foundation, along with a special matching gift from Walgreen's.

"RASCALS is extremely grateful to the leadership at Walgreen's for their participation in this scholarship project. Their generosity will definitely help to change lives in our ALS community," said Robert Stehlin, founder and president of the 501(c)(3) non-profit, public charity.

The application period, which began June 1, will be open through August 31, 2011. Eligible applicants are ALS patients or their family members. The awards will provide assistance in their pursuit of higher education, and may be used for any scholastic-related need, such as tuition expenses and schoolbooks.

"We've already received requests for applications and more information, so we're very pleased with the response so far," said Mr. Stehlin. "But if you're interested, remember that there are only two months left to get your essays written and submitted."

There will be two scholarships awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year in the amounts of $3,500 each. All applicants will submit a 1000-word essay on the theme: "How ALS Has Influenced You."

Mr. Stehlin, who was diagnosed in September 2009 with ALS, said the disease impacts the entire family. "While there are all sorts of challenges, it is extremely important that families remain positive and forward-looking," he explained, "and that's the intended spirit of these scholarships."

Selection will be made on the basis of various criteria, including school activities, scholastic achievements, awards, and community projects, in addition to the contents of the essay.

Applications for this year's scholarships will be accepted Recipients will be determined by the Board of Directors of the RASCALS Foundation, and notified on or before September 30, 2011.
