The Rev. Larry Rice, who was entangled in court battles to get former federal building in Cape Girardeau, said Thursday he would not bid on it. The building is now available at an online auction at the General Services Administration's website, with a suggested opening bid of $750,000 for the two-story, 44-year-old building at 339 Broadway. Rice said neither he nor his group had the money to buy it and he did not feel he had the support of the community to make a go of it. Rice had intended at one point to convert the federal building to a homeless shelter.

There is a God!!! Thank you!!
OK IF ITS FREE THE L.R. SEES A GREAT NEED BUT IF HE HAS TO PAY THEN THERE IS NOT ENOUGH COMMUITY SUPPORT TO SUCCEED.
IF IT WOULD SUCCEED FOR FREE WHY NOT IF YOU HAVE TO MAKE A INVESTMENT?
Thank you Larry Rice!!! Now, go away forever!!!
capeguy30, WHAT in God's name does that have to do with THIS article???
There's a pool in the Federal building?
Hey Larry See if the GSA will rent it to you with the same terms the City of Cape did with airport hanger. They got a deal!!!!!
Mr. Rice is correct - there is neither the need nor the support for such a facility in this town. Assistance is already provided to those who are temporarily down on their luck. Let's keep the out of town influences out of town and let us deal with our own issues. That being said, the GSA will not be able to find a buyer for $750K. The building is sorely out of date, is run down on the inside, and is in a dead part of town. I'm glad the county's offer was not accepted (county offices belong in Jackson, our county seat)...and I don't see the need for the town to have this building either. What's left? SEMO - ultimately, their ever expanding parking lot may overtake Broadway, and perhaps in a few years, when SEMO has the money and the price comes down, that will be a topic of conversation.
