CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Sarah Ann "Sally" Wehmeyer, 91, of Chaffee passed away Sunday morning, May 1, 2011, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
She was born April 9, 1920 to the late William E. and Catherine Burk Snead. Due to her mother passing away while Sally was an infant, she was adopted by her aunt Ruth Snead and O.H. Ballard.
She was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.
She graduated from Northeast State College in Kirksville, Mo.
Sally and Dr. Pete Wehmeyer were married Aug. 20, 1945. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1986.
She and Pete started the family doctor practice in June 1953. They helped the people of Chaffee 24 hours a day, seven days a week for over 33 years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chaffee, the American Association of Osteopathic Specialists and the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 389.
Sally learned to love the city of Chaffee's government as she first served on the City Council, then became the first female mayor of Chaffee in 1970. She also served on the Scott County ambulance and Chaffee police boards for several years.
She is survived by a son, James B. (Patricia) Wehmeyer of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Wehmeyer of The Woodlands, Texas; two grandsons, James R. Wehmeyer of Austin and Matthew Helmandottar of The Woodlands; and one great-grandson, James Marshall Wehmeyer of Austin.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, William H. "Billy" Wehmeyer and Michael W. Wehmeyer.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel, with Pastor J. Michael Davis officiating.
Burial will be at Forrest Hills Memorial Gardens near Morley, Mo.
