High school roundup: Oran baseball team remains perfect despite not capturing Chaffee tourney crown

The Oran baseball team appeared on its way to a resounding championship at the Chaffee tournament.

Then the rain came.

Undefeated Oran, ranked No. 1 in Class 1, led Shawnee, Ill., 11-1 in the top of the fifth inning Saturday night when the title game was stopped. Attempts will be made to finish the contest.

Earlier Saturday in their first game of the day, the Eagles (15-0) were down 5-0 but came back to defeat Saxony Lutheran 16-8.

Nolan Urhahn went 3 for 3 with two doubles, while Seth Ressel had three hits.

Tyler Heuring went 2 for 3 with a double, while Kody Moore and Zac Chasteen both had two hits.

Chasteen was the pitcher for the Eagles, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing six earned runs on eight hits.

Clay Roth went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs for the Crusaders, while Trent Steffens had three hits and three RBIs.

Roth was the losing pitcher, giving up nine hits and seven earned runs.

In the third-place game, host Chaffee shut out Saxony Lutheran 8-0.

Cody Payne threw a shutout, giving up just three hits while striking out seven and walking none.

Alex Davie went 3 for 4 with a double, while Andrew Terhune was 2 for 4 with a double for the Red Devils (15-3).

Spencer Sander and Gabe Bohnert both had a double in the loss.

Chaffee lost its semifinal to Shawnee 6-3.

Alex Crowe homered in the loss, while Trevor Cannon went 3 for 3 with a double.

Perryville lost in the fifth-place game 18-8 against Twin Rivers.

Perryville tournament

St. Vincent defeated Perryville 3-1 in the championship game.

Holly Blandford and Abby Lappe scored for the Indians.

Allie Moldenhauer had the Pirates' (7-4) lone goal, with by Sam Amberger picking up the assist.

Natalie Bauwens had 12 saves in the loss.

It was the third time the two teams met, with St. Vincent winning two of them.

Jackson's junior varsity ousted Saxony Lutheran 2-1 in overtime in the consolation finals.

Nicole Hemmann netted the Crusaders' goal. Sarah Winningham had the assist.

Cape Duels

The Tigers lost to Parkway West 4-5.

Matt Griffith and Blake Kidd both won their singles' match and then teamed to win in doubles in three sets.

Central then defeated Eureka 5-4.

Caleb Yeargain pulled out his match with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 win at No. 6 singles.

Paden Wachter won the discus and took second in the shot put to help the Jackson girls finish seventh out of 16 teams.

Zhao Ni Dirnberger took second in the 3,200, while Tori Parry had a third-place finish in the 1,600.

Sierra Maddox was third in the pole vault.

The Jackson boys took sixth, with all four of their relays having a top-eight finish.

Brannen Wright finished second in the 200, while Blake Smith took third in the 100.

Ben Rushin placed third in the shot put.

Chris Reed finished third in the pole vault.
