High school roundup: Central's Simmons wins co-medalist at Jackson Invitational

Travis Simmons of Central shot a 1-over-par 72 at Kimbeland Country Club on Monday to tie for the medalist honor at the Jackson Invitational.

Carr Vernon of Poplar Bluff also turned in a 72 as the Mules won the team title by seven strokes over host Jackson in the 12-team event.

Poplar Bluff finished with a 306 total, followed by Jackson at 313 and Central at 323.

Connor Thrower led Jackson with a third-place finish, shooting a 75.

Central's Corey Connell tied for fourth with a 76.

The Bulldogs pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand visiting Farmington its first loss of the season.

Cody Heisserer went the distance on the mound, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out five. The Bulldogs improved to 9-1.

Nathan Beussink homered and doubled to lead Notre Dame's nine-hit attack.

Eric Hayes went 3 for 4 with two doubles. Jonathan Lynch had two hits, including a triple.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-0 before scoring four fifth-inning runs. That's the way things stood through the regulation seven innings.

Heath Pobst belted a grand slam as the Rams blistered the Illinois squad in five innings.

Jamie Scholz also homered for the Rams (6-5-1). Ryan Fortner doubled twice and Brett Dirnberger tripled.

Pobst, Scholz and Dirnberger had two hits, as did Landon Robert and Austin Atchley.

Hunter Cox was the winner.

Junior midfielder Courtney Herberlie scored off a pass from Mallory Tucker with 13 minutes left in the first half. Heberlie deposited a shot from outside the box to put the Indians (10-3) up 1-0.

Holly Cissell scored early in the second half as she stole the ball from a Poplar Bluff defender, scooted around the goalkeeper and deposited the ball in a wide-open net.

Perryville 4, North County 0

Morgan Franklin scored two goals and added an assist to lead the host Pirates.

Allison Moldenhauer added the other two goals for Perryville (5-3). Sam Amberger and Kelsey Schremp both collected an assist.

Courtney Bergman scored the lone goal for the Crusaders.
