Franklin Elem kids to the rescue, called "heroes"

When a student fell and was hurt on the Franklin Elementary School playground recently he was not severely injured, but did require several stitches. Two of his friends, Deautryus Curry and Donta Depree, were playing nearby and kept very cool heads, according to Franklin Counselor Debra Rau. "They lifted their friend away from the gathered crowd and summoned help from the adult on the playground. Another student, Jasalyn Buchanan, ran for the nurse and medical supplies," Rau said. "The three children remained calm and acted maturely to better help their friend." Coincidently, Franklin Elementary was celebrating "What Makes a Hero Month" when the incident occurred. Rau added, "I know that we have some amazing young people here, and this was a day that they showed their strength of character. Donta, Jasalyn and Deautryus are my heroes!" The three were recognized during the Cape School District board of education March meeting, and are pictured above with Superintendent Dr. Jim Welker (left), Board President Paul Nenninger, and Franklin Principal Dr. Rhonda Dunham.
