Sam McVay

Sam McVay certainly had a servant's heart. Last Sunday the former executive director of the Missouri Veterans Commission passed away in Ghana, Africa.

While serving on a mission trip in Africa with his wife Linda, McVay, 68, collapsed on a beach. While he will surely be missed by family and friends, his life was filled with purpose. McVay started his career as a social worker. Before accepting the executive director position with the Missouri Veterans Commission, he was an administrator for the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau -- a position he would return to before retiring.

Upon retirement, McVay served for several years as the church administrator for First Baptist Church in Jackson. He had also been the director of Sunday school at the church in addition to being involved with the church's family ministries.

McVay had a heart for missions, participating in several mission trips over the years. In addition to his recent work in Africa, McVay volunteered to helped victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the McVay family for their loss. And may Sam McVay's life be a reminder to us all to think of others. Whether you have a passion for mentoring, faith-based initiatives or any number of other worthy causes, consider volunteering. Sam McVay had a heart for others. May we also seek opportunities to serve where there is a need.
