CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pvt. Christopher Lawson, of Ellsinore, recently completed his military training to become a military policeman for Missouri National Guard's Detachment 2, 1137th Military Police Company in Doniphan.

"I joined the Guard because believe this is an opportunity to better myself and further my education," said Lawson. "My grandfather also served in the military, and I think my service is something he would have wanted and been proud of."

Lawson graduated from basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Dec. 9, 2010.

Prior to training, Lawson served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.

Staff Sgt. James Rudd, recruiter at the Poplar Bluff armory, said Lawson be a successful Soldier with his new unit. Rudd is particularly proud of Lawson's dedication to complete the Army National Guard's GED Plus Program, where Lawson received his GED in a 2-week course at Camp Robinson, Ark.

"He has a great attitude and drive to be successful," said Wilkerson. "He'll bring a lot to his new unit."

Lawson will begin serving with his new unit in January 2011.
