New Life schedules news conference today in Cape Girardeau

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

Officials from New Life Evangelistic Center will hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss their next move now that a judge's ruling has effectively ended the organization's plan to convert the former federal courthouse on Broadway into a homeless shelter.

The group said it will talk about "future endeavors to acquire the property," as well as New Life's ongoing work in Cape Girardeau.

On Dec. 1, District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly denied New Life's challenge of the Department of Health and Human Services' 2009 decision not to give the building to the homeless assistance organization.

The judge's ruling clears the way for the Cape Girardeau County Commission to explore acquiring the property to replace the Common Pleas Courthouse, and the courthouse annex on Lorimier Street.

when and where is this news conference? I got a fresh box of eggs to toss!

New Life Evangelistic Center need to give this up. We already have like 3 or 4 homeless shelters in Cape now. And we dont have that many homless people in Cape. These churchy wackos just want the the property to start another jesus cult in town.

Timex I hope you are successful in your egging (I am even willing to throw in rotton bananas), however I found your last remark quite objectional. Not all church going people are wackos like this guy. And if believing in Jesus is a cult in your opinion, well let's just say we disagree.

I find your comment ubsured and unjust if you don't know rev rice don't judge and there is no homeless shelters in cape if there are they are for women and kids not men and he has opened a shelter above the store in cape I think he still has ties with the store and also he is a nice guy just needs to get his priorities straight maybe we need to throw bananas at you and I know Timexx and he wouldn't like a cult in cape but this isnt a cult! I am not sticking up for rev rice I am just saying what i think

i really don't understand why this guy has not stopped this yet. he's a crazy man who can't take a hint.

This dude is a disgrace to religious people. He is in it for the money. Give it up! The people of Cape Girardeau are not going to stand for a bunch of winoes hanging out on Broadway. There is a time and a PLACE for everything.

Adidas- I do agree with you that "not ALL church going people are wackos'". I don't think that just believing in Jesus makes someone a Cult. However many radical religious groups take things way to far and become cults over time. Many unsavory people use Jesus and churches to hide their own indiscretions and immoral activity. They use their own church leadership status as a way to boast their finical gains. Groups like Rev. Larry Rice's New Life Evangelistic Center, Terry Jones (of Koran-burning fame), Westboro Baptist Church, Jim Jones, The Branch Davidians and other such groups end up going to far in the end.

I don't understand why does Rev. Larry Rice feel like this is the ONLY building in Cape he can use for a Homeless Shelter. It was not designed to be a living quarters. it would take lots of money to rebuild and redesign that place to be livable. It would need fire escapes added along with kitchens bathrooms, showers , and more. I see several other places in town that could be better used for this. The Homeless Shelter going in down on the south side look to have potential. Why doesn't Rev. Rice join up with that group to help finish that project. This is what makes me feel he has ulterior motives in wanting this one building. Is it just so that HE will be the head of the group, and have access to the money. Not to mention he currently has people living above his business now. Those residents already wonder Broadway asking for smokes and money. You can find several of them rummaging threw trash cans behind Broadway business. The fire and ambulance are called to his current location regularly to take care of sick homeless people living there.

Cape does have several homeless shelters open now. I saw a KFVS story about a south side church that has recently opened several rooms. Red Cross, Salvation Army, The Woman's Center, many local churches all help out. We also have

I just find it hard to believe that Rev Rich is JUST in it to help the Homeless. Or he would be willing to look at other options besides the old Federal Building on Broadway.

Number one Rice just wants more property in his portfolio. The homeless come second.

I also wonder why Cape City Fire, Building and Welfare Inspectors have not yet dropped into Rev. Rice's Broadway Flop House. To see what conditions these people are currently living in. Are there adequate restrooms and showers. Sprinklers, and exits?

Also the Missourian should ask Subway, Flesh-Hound, SEMO Video, and other Broadway business how well they like Rev. Rice's residents so far.

timexx: Larry Rice may be in it for the ego boost, but glancing at the financial reports I don't see much room for huge financial gains. He takes a fairly small salary(~30k), and while he could get reimbursements, cash & material donations from other parts of the organization unless he is completely cooking the books it would be tough to get more than another 30k at best.

Larry Rice could make a heck of a lot more money investing his time in the private sector if that was his goal. Of course he likely wouldn't constantly have his name in the newspaper and face on the TV. So either Larry Rice is just in for the small time notoriety & ego stroking or he is the real deal as far as his motivations go.

I know little of the reasons of the reverend, but it sounds to me it could be more about a power trip intent on control and fame.

This like many communities has plenty of help available for folks in need. They even advertise help on local media as if trying to lure more people into need so they can provide it.

-- Posted by Old John on Wed, Dec 29, 2010, at 12:03 AM

Nil- He might be getting that now. But as the head of a group, with property. he would most likely be able to get grants and other money that he could "use". If it were all just EGO, I could deal with that. (Lord knows I love to see my own name in print.) But it seems he is set on getting this one building. He has made no mention of other buildings he could use. Like a old apartment or vacant old house. Even a old school would work. but he wants this one building and only this one building. And he is willing to tie up everything on this one project. He doesn't say things like, "I want to help the homeless and God will open another door if this one is closed.' No he's ready to go to the mattress and talk about "future endeavors to acquire the property". He has other plans.

I believe it is all about the principle. The law says it should be used in a certain manner and the law shouldn't be changed just because some people don't like the idea. I applaud him for not giving up on the principle. Too many people just want to ignore rules and laws to fit their own agenda. I believe the law should be followed.

Rev. Rice has done nothing wrong here. He won't get the Fed building so this is a dead issue now.

I am sure that many folks here will continue to dislike him even if he builds a homeless shelter down in Smelterville! The question that does remain is what will come of the Fed building. I am against the County purchasing this building to use it as a third County Court building! Perhaps the Feds should give it to the local Native Americans! Turn it into a small Reservation, build a casino and really pizz some of you folks off! Just saying...

-- Posted by GREYWOLF on Wed, Dec 29, 2010, at 9:24 AM

well, either they get the federal building for the County Court building or another building. They are in desperate need of a new facility. Have you been in the annex on Lorimer? It's awful. Parts of the ceiling have collapsed. They need something.

-- Posted by truetiger98 on Wed, Dec 29, 2010, at 10:27 AM

Perhaps they do truetiger98 but why have it in Cape when Jackson is the County seat. There is no need for 2 Court locations and two annex buildings in two seperate county cities. This only cost tax payers more money and has for years.

Its time we build a new Court house in Jackson or move the County seat to Cape and purchase the Fed building and bring it up to code. Convienence is not a good reason to have several court buildings and annex buildings in different county cities. at least not this century! Too costly in both building maintenance and salaries. Time to eliminate the waste involved in having this many locations in my opine.
