Tuesday, December 28, 2010

Gus Klaus scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Saxony Lutheran boys basketball team to an upset victory at the Bloomfield Christmas tournament Monday.

Clayton Carver added 11 points to help the No. 12 seed Crusaders beat host Bloomfield, the No. 5 seed, 55-53.

Saxony Lutheran will face Portageville today in the second round. The Crusaders beat the Bulldogs last week.

Carver, Matt Wills and Gabe Bohnert all recorded four rebounds for Saxony Lutheran (4-3), which hit 79 percent (19 of 24) of its free throws.

SAXONY LUTHERAN (55) -- Gus Klaus 19, Kris Cook 6, Clayton Carver 11, Taylor Johnson 3, Matt Wills 6, Gabe Bohnert 10. FG 17, FT 19-24, F 25. (3-pointers: Carver 1, Johnson 1. Fouled out: none)

Perryville 64, Lesterville 61

The Pirates held on to advance at the North County tournament.

Perryville enjoyed a 12-point lead entering the fourth quarter so coach Vicki Lohmann gave some of her bench players some quality minutes. But Lesterville cut the lead to 10 points with about three minutes left, so the Pirates starters reentered.

It got so close that Lesterville got off a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer that hit the rim but bounced away.

Abbie Schilli scored 13 points and snared eight rebounds, while Natalie Bauwens grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for Perryville (4-4).

Natalie Gremaud paced the Pirates with 17 points.

LESTERVILLE (61) -- Cook 19, Woods 8, Nichols 7, Dowler 8, Watts 9, Meyers 6, Thomas 4. FG 22, FT 12-18, F 8. (3-pointers: Cook 3, Woods 1, Nichols 1. Fouled out: none)
