CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pvt. Dalton Giffin, of Essex, recently completed his military training to become a motor transportation operator for Missouri National Guard's 1221st Transportation Company in Dexter.

"I joined the Guard because I want to serve my country," Griffin said. He also joined for the education benefits which will allow him to attend college, but pride in his country was the biggest factor.

He graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Okla., June 4, 2010, and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Dec. 3, 2010.

Prior to training, Griffin served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.

Staff Sgt. Clinton Petty, recruiter at the Sikeston armory, said Griffin is following a family tradition by serving with the Missouri National Guard. He has two older brothers who currently serve, one with the 1221st Transportation Company.

"It's great to have such a legacy and he's following in his brothers' footsteps," said Petty. "He'll be a good Soldier for the company."

Griffin will begin serving with his new unit in January 2011.

Griffin is the son of Barry and Michele Horton, of Essex. He is a graduate of Richland High School.
