Pigg graduates from military training

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pfc. Edward Pigg, of Cape Girardeau, recently completed his military training to become an infantryman for Missouri National Guard's Company C, 1/138th Infantry Regiment in Perryville.

"I joined the Guard because I love my country and wanted to help protect it," Pigg said. He also joined for the education and financial benefits, but pride in his country was the biggest factor.

He graduated from basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Ga., Dec. 3, 2010.

Prior to training, Pigg served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.

Staff Sgt. Jeremy McGuire, recruiter at the Cape Girardeau armory, said Pigg will be a positive addition to the infantry company.

"He has the drive and perseverance to be a great Soldier," said McGuire. "He'll contribute a lot to the success of any squad or platoon he's placed in."

Pigg will begin serving with his new unit in January 2011.

Pigg is the son of Edward Pigg, of Kokomo, Ill. and Rita Coluis, of Chester, Ill. He is currently attending Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.
