Fountain Street ribbon cutting today

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

Missouri's first DREAM Initiative project will be completed this week in Cape Girardeau. City dignitaries will celebrate with a brief ribbon cutting event at 11:30 a.m. today on-site at the new Fountain and Morgan Oak streets roundabout. "This is very exciting for downtown and all of Cape Girardeau," city manager Scott Meyer said. "And we're looking forward to development along the riverfront from downtown to Highway 74." Improvements along Fountain Street near the River Campus were extended from Morgan Oak Street to William Street. Construction in the area includes pavers in both the street and sidewalk and decorative lighting. Contractor Nip Kelley completed the project ahead of schedule. Project funding included a Community Development Block Grant of $400,000, a state enhancement grant of $104,000, $300,000 in Transportation Trust Fund money, and $490,000 in federal funding. Total construction costs are estimated at just more than $1 million.
