City Expands Leaf Disposal Program

The leaf season can be a battle for many homeowners trying to keep their lawn healthy and yard free of leaf debris.

"Once you rake, your yard can be covered again in a week," said Public Works Director Tim Gramling. "Some trees shed all winter or the neighbor's leaves can blow into your yard. It can be very frustrating for some homeowners."

Cape Girardeau residents have four leaf disposal options.

1. Curbside Loose Leaf Collection: Residents should pile their leaves at the curb by the date shown on this map. The City's vacuum truck will pick-up leaves but not pine needles, tree limbs or other debris because they are too heavy or could damage the machine.

2. Compost Bags: Bags are sold in bundles of 5 for $6.25 at City Hall, Public Works, Food Giant and Schnucks. Residents can call Public Works (339-6351) at any time to schedule a special Wednesday compost bag pick-up.

3. Dump Site: Don't want to wait for a pick-up? Dump your yard waste FREE Mon. -- Fri. from noon to 4 p.m. or on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Compost Holding Site on this map.

4. Mulching: No waiting, no dumping and reap the reward. Shredded, dried leaves can improve the health of your soil or be the start of your own compost bin. Look online or call your Public Works Department for tips to get started.

These options will help residents manage constantly falling and blowing leaves throughout the leaf season. "We can't pick-up every leaf in the City," said Gramling, "but we do make it as convenient as possible for residents to get rid of leaf debris."
