Mayor of Southeast Missouri town dies following shooting

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 ~ Updated 10:10 AM

LILBOURN, Mo. (AP) -- An autopsy is planned on a rural Southeast Missouri mayor who died two days after being shot in the head by a councilman who later killed himself.

New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens tells KFVS-TV of Cape Girardeau that 56-year-old Lilbourn Mayor Leonard Thomas died Tuesday after being taken off life support at a Memphis hospital.

An autopsy was planned for Wednesday by the county's coroner.

Investigators say witnesses told them that 56-year-old Lonnie Moore and Thomas had been arguing Sunday when it escalated. On Sunday night, authorities found Moore dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and Thomas with a gunshot wound to the head.

Stevens says Moore shot Thomas before killing himself.

"Stevens says Moore shot Thomas before killing himself." No shxx. Would it have been possible for Moore to shoot Thomas AFTER killing himself?

I am glad we have kfvs and the missourian to report these facts

I think the article was trying to convey that this was a murder-suicide instead of a double homicide. There's a big difference in how each of those scenarios are investigated and handled

Mayor of North Lilbourn, not the mayor of Lilbourn. Two different towns. Mayor of Lilbourn is very much alive and not involved in this fiasco.

beaker, I am pretty sure that everyone got that in the first sentence "who died two days after being shot in the head by a councilman who later killed himself."

I'm just saying
