Grand opening set for Sowers' field office

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Tommy Sowers, democratic candidate for Missouri's U.S. House of Representatives 8th district seat, will hold a grand opening for his new field office at 5 p.m. Sunday at 1105 Broadway in Cape Girardeau. Sowers will greet supporters and volunteers to update them on his campaign following a ribbon cutting ceremony. The building was previously home to Rhea Optical and will serve as a local campaign headquarters through the Nov. 2 general election. The site was chosen in part for its proximity to Southeast Missouri State University, where a Students for Sowers group has formed to help with voter outreach efforts including phone banking and going door to door, said Christie Cunningham, communications director for the Sowers campaign. This week, Sowers has opened campaign offices in West Plains, Dexter and Farmington. The campaign also has offices in Rolla and Poplar Bluff.

semoguy85: You guys wore out the God, guns and gays issues the previous 8 years. People don't care about your ideology anymore. Just like the abortion issue, you conservatives love the fetus but forsake the child. You represent nothing but pure greed and then more greed. JAE voted to support everything you guys are against (all bailouts) yet you still support her. She is nothing but a carpet bagger. I know it, and you know it.

Cosmo: You support conservatives that support wars but refuse to fight in them. JAE voted against military raises. How does that strike you as a "vet" you claim to be. How can she support war and not support paying the folks that fight in them? That's disgraceful and should be enough to get rid of her and back to her natural surroundings as a lobbyist.

Vote for "None of the Above".

I hope he does have a fundraiser at a gay bar in Cape. I will be the first in line to support him. You narrow-minded people need to realize that this is 2010 not 1910. THINGS HAVE CHANGED whether you like it or not but by god you're **** sure gonna have to deal with it.

howdydoody, I'm so glad you were able to articulate what I could not.

semoguy85, are we supposed to be scared? or put off by this? as in, "OMG this politician had a fundraiser and took support from gays???" Give me a break! Although assumptions can get you in a lot of hot water, I would venture to guess that you listen to Rush Limbaugh, as do many of the conservatives in our town. Are you aware that Rush supports civil unions and gays? Now let's move along into the present where, yes, I hate to break it to you, most people with half a brain know that gays are PEOPLE!!! They are no different from you with the exception that they chose to be in relationships with those of their same gender. That is the ONLY difference. Tat does not make them immoral or crazy or even odd. Just ask Dick Cheney. He has first-hand knowledge of what it is like to have a gay member of his family. Now grow up and get your head our of the sand!!!

Jo Ann has always voted for military pay raises until this year and has never voted for a pay raise for herself. Here's the problem with this year's military pay raise bill. Because of Tommy's Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, this year's pay raise for the military was tied to repealing don't ask, don't tell (allowing gays to openly serve in all military units without restriction). In other words, to vote for the pay raise, you had to vote to permit gays to serve openly in any military unit without restriction. Tommy sees nothing wrong with that. Jo Ann sees alot wrong with that since it would short circuit the military-wide DoD survey on this issue which will come out this winter. So,howdydoody, please, in the name of honesty--please note that Jo Ann has always voted for military pay raises unless the raises are held hostage to don't ask, don't tell repeal. Since Tommy supports gays serving openly in any military unit without DoD input, the vote is easy for him. He is a gay rights advocate. So be it. Just admit it, Tommy. Since Jo Ann shares the concerns of many in repealing don't ask, don't tell without defense department input, she refuses to submit to Pelosi's cheap tricks. With the wide impact of the house bill which would have allowed gays to openly serve in every type of military unit without even considering input from the military services, Jo Ann felt compelled to vote, "No." Tommy would have ignored all input from the military and would have voted, "Yes" because of his support for gay rights. That might even be commendable if he would just admit it. One candidate acquires all available info, to include from the Defense Department, the other shoots from the hip for political expediency. Sounds like his support for national health care and Prop C at the same time Maybe that's why Jo Ann still has a 2-1 lead in the polls.

Is Ike gay too?

-- Posted by We Regret To Inform U on Thu, Aug 19, 2010, at 4:14 PM

Viked,

What poll is that?

Larry Bill

-- Posted by nolimitsonthought on Thu, Aug 19, 2010, at 5:07 PM

Ike does not support repeal of DADT and voted against the amendment to do so. Its unfortunate that Pelosi tied a pay raise to this issue so that he had to vote for it as part of the overall pay raise bill. These are the games that infuriate people about the Pelosi San Francisco Democrat crowd. She should not have held a military pay raise hostage to an unrelated gay rights issue.

Wow, Viked, Jo Ann is down to a 2:1 lead in the polls before her opponent even runs an ad? She usually wins 3:1 doesn't she? Sounds to me like she's losing support daily.

I don't know if it's Tommy, Larry, or Rick that are pulling away all her former voters, but maybe all this gay-baiting you guys are doing isn't really working the way you thought? Really, you sound like a bunch of towel snapping junior high school boys in the locker room. The voters aren't so foolish.

Viked: very, very seldom does a bill go through congress on it's merits alone. I stand by my fact that she voted against the pay raise because she did. Don't try to spin the BS that your spinning. I have a question for you since you seem to have inside info. Does she receive a congressional pension from her deceased husband Bill? That is a question I would really like answered.

-- Posted by howdydoody on Thu, Aug 19, 2010, at 7:48 PM

DCisnot4me abd howdydoody, I can answer parts of both your questions.

Of course she is losing support to all of the other three candidates in the general election. What Viked posted was, at best, lame. Let's see the poll. When was it taken? What questions were asked? Polls are nothing mote than statistics and like all statistics the numbers can be manipulated.

Jo Ann WILL receive a Congressional pension based on her time in the House and also Bill's. She will not get it until she leaves office, but when she does it will be one of the largest and most costly (to taxpayers) pension in the history of the United States. And that is not hyperbole - it is a fact.

Gays openly serving in the military is a serious issue and Tommy is out of touch with this district on that issue. If you want to start throwing around stuff like that then here's one, Tommy would have voted to cut Medicare.

Jo Ann has never beaten anybody 3:1, but if Tommy keeps wasting his money trying to build his "Army" then this one might get that ugly.

Hominy, do you by any chance like to hang out at Jeremiah's? I think I've seen you there.

DC, is the 8thCD for you? Where are you posting from?

Tommy has been running ads. He ran it for three weeks without any response from Emerson. It was very creative.

Sorry, howdydoody, I forgot to add that the pension will be a nice supplement if Jo Ann can ever land a $1,000,000.00 per year gig like she recently went for with the Credit Union National Association.

-- Posted by Hominy on Thu, Aug 19, 2010, at 8:59 PM

There's an awful lot of untrue statements floating around in these comments.

Jo Ann was leading 71 to 18 based on her own internal polling which she published in April, before boots on the ground 1 or 2, and well before Tommy had run any ads.

Tommy has never said he favors legalizing same sex marriage; in fact, since that issue has been resolved in our state, it's a non-issue.

Tommy is absolutely a true veteran, and not a liberal. He's a working class Democrat-what our district used to be full of.

Finally, The Source and the rumor about the gay bar are both complete trash. If you're really so set on the gay bar thing, watch this video: http://downloads.cbn.com/cbnnewsplayer/c...

That link will take you to coverage of Tommy's fundraiser that you're talking about, but it was aired on the Christian Broadcasting Network. As you can tell, it's an ordinary establishment, fit to be shown on a Christian news network.

I thought Boots on the Ground I was in Feb or Jan--before the poll.
