Cooling center opens in Cape Girardeau

In response to the current heat advisories, the Southeast Missouri chapter of the American Red Cross has opened a cooling center in Cape Girardeau. The National Weather Service has issued a heat warning for Cape Girardeau County and surrounding areas lasting until 7 p.m. today. The heat index is predicted to reach between 110 and 115 degrees throughout the next two days. Temperatures for the rest of the week will be in the 90s. Heat of this magnitude can result in the quick onset of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The cooling center is at the Osage Community Centre, 1625 N. Kingshighway. Hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
