Safe Fourth

Fireworks are a big part of the Fourth of July celebrations in Southeast Missouri. There are fireworks that are sold to the public by authorized vendors who can sell only for a limited time and are also limited by local ordinances to certain allowable fireworks. And there are professional displays of large fireworks, the kind that draw large crowds after dark on Independence Day. All fireworks can be dangerous, and those who set them off -- children, adults and professional pyrotechnics experts -- need to be cautious.

Regarding fireworks intended for personal use, adults need to both set a good example of safe use and teach their children basic fireworks safety. The National Council on Fireworks Safety says approved fireworks sold at licensed stands are safe to use as long as instructions are followed carefully. Here are safety tips from the council:

* Only use fireworks outdoors.

* Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.

* Never give fireworks to young children, and always wear safety glasses.

* Always have a bucket of water or a water hose nearby.

* Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.

By following safety rules and instructions for legal fireworks, everyone can have a happy and safe Fourth.
