County boards

Recent visitors to the Cape Girardeau County website (www.capecounty.us) may have noticed a note on the home page about a recent addition that has the potential to involve more county residents in their government.

The website has added a page listing openings on county boards and advisory committees. Already posted are upcoming appointments to the Riverside Regional Library Board, Sheltered Workshop/Handicapped Facility Board, Senior Citizens Service Fund Board, County Law Enforcement Crime Restitution Board and Cape Girardeau County Common Sewer District Board. Each of these board provides oversight for the spending of tax dollars. Anyone interest in serving on these county boards is advised by the website to contact the county commission either by phone (243-1052) or e-mail (commishcapecounty.us).

The importance of these boards has been made more evident in recent days. The filling of a vacancy on the SB40 Board, which oversees tax revenue for sheltered workshops, has become contentious. While most county boards operate in virtual anonymity and with little, if any, public notice, they are making crucial decisions.

Finding qualified and committed individuals who have the passion to make meaningful contributions becomes even more critical.
