Staying cool

Although Southeast Missouri has enjoyed a relatively mild spring, the hot temperatures and high humidity for which our summers are known are just around the corner. On the few 90-plus days we've had so far, the effects have already been felt.

This is the time to prepare for summer weather. If you have central air conditioning or window units, have a qualified technician check them out. Finding problems now instead of on the hottest day of the year makes good sense.

If your utility bills are too high when air conditioners are running, try turning the thermostat up a bit. Just a degree or two can make a big difference.

In addition to keeping cool, we need to take care of ourselves and others who may need assistance. Drink plenty of fluids on hot days, particularly if you work or play outdoors. Pay attention to warning signs that you've had too much heat. Dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion can cause a variety of symptoms.

The official start of summer will arrive in just a few days. There are many ways to enjoy the season. Be sure to check on friends, relatives and neighbors, particularly the elderly, during these hot months ahead.
