Helping animals

Sometimes we forget how fortunate this area is to have an organization like the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, which runs Cape Girardeau's animal shelter. Thank goodness, dozens of volunteers and hundreds of donors place a high priority on the shelter's mission. One of those volunteers called attention to the Humane Society's needs in a special way. He had a party for his 11th birthday at the shelter and asked guests to bring items used to care for animals or make a donation.

As shelter officials point out, Hunter Miller's recent birthday bash isn't the first time a child has requested donations rather than presents, but his is the biggest event so far.

Hunter and his mother spend most Saturdays volunteering at the shelter. Donated items include bleach, laundry detergent, paper towels and kitten food, as well as cash -- all of which can be taken to the shelter on Route W any time.

The young advocate for responsible animal care is the son of Sarah and Bryan Glosemeyer of Cape Girardeau and Dutch Miller of Advance. They can be proud of their son for his efforts on behalf of animals taken in by the shelter. Thanks, Hunter, and happy birthday.
