Ten kindergartners from Girl Scout troop No. 700279 earned patches recently by volunteering to help with the community garden at Broadway Books and Roasting Co. The Scouts learned how to garden and recycle with the help of Mary Maginel. Mary met with them once a month at the garden to go over the craft of gardening. On the first trip to the garden the girls prepared the soil with used coffee grinds from the shop. On the second visit, they got down and dirty planting a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, potatoes, spinach and carrots. The last visit last week had the girls planting marigolds, a flower mentioned in the Daisy handbook. The community garden was made to encourage people to plant gardens in their own backyard. It also encourages people to grow and eat locally grown produce.
