Driving safety

Driving safety should be on the minds of every driver who gets behind the steering wheel of a car or truck. We are reminded of the need for caution and care whenever we see or hear about a tragic accident like the recent one at the busy intersection of Kingshighway and William Street.

We have just ended the first big three-day holiday, Memorial Day weekend, which marks the start of the vacation and travel season. Unfortunately, the nationwide traffic-fatality count is a sad reminder of highway dangers.

These dangers come in many forms: motorists who drink and drive, motorists who don't wear seat belts nor require all passengers to be buckled up, motorists who don't comply with laws requiring young children to be in secure car seats, motorists who don't stay focused on driving, motorists who fail to keep an eye out by driving defensively.

Just as some motorists are capable of driving safely when roads are icy while others are not, every motorist has a tremendous responsibility to take every precaution possible while being constantly aware that every other driver on the streets and highways may not be as attentive or as safety-conscious.

Driving with care can save lives. Let's all do our part to make sure we arrive safely at our destinations and that any passengers in our vehicles are following good safety procedures.
