Cape Central Academic Team qualifies for State

The Cape Central High School Academic Competition team swept to a sectional championship at Pacific High School on Thursday, taking the best two-out-of-three format by winning the first game 330-170 and the second game by a score of 260-100. The win marks Central's first sectional championship since the change to a new playoff format in 2009.

Josh Wen led the Tigers with twenty-three tossups in two games, supported by Prithvi Rudrappa's eight. Regulars Matthew Pirtle, Adam Legrand and Owen Hill also played for Central. Sophomore Kelsey Martin missed the games because of State debate competition in Columbia this week, but will rejoin the team later.

With the win, Cape Central becomes one of the top eight teams in Missouri in Class IV, and qualifies for the State tournament on May 8.

Fondly referred to as the "CIA" or "Central Intelligence Agency" the team ran its season record to 34-4 with the sweep. The Tigers have won four of the last five District championships.
