New Guardsman to be assigned to Jackson MP unit

Pfc. Riley Campbell

BONNE TERRE, Mo. -- Riley Campbell, of Bonne Terre, has enlisted in the Missouri National Guard.

Campbell will serve with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment Program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he will learn Army basic skills and values and become more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.

"I want to be able to serve my country and make it a better place," Campbell said.

Campbell, a junior at North County High School, was recruited by Staff Sgt. Karla Threlkeld of the Missouri National Guard's Farmington, Mo., office.

Campbell, 17, enlisted on March 3, will attend basic training this summer and advanced individual training next summer after he graduates from high school. Campbell is scheduled to leave June 1 for basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. Upon completion of advanced individual training, Campbell will be assigned to the 1137th Military Police Company in Jackson.

After graduation, he intends to go to Ranken Technical College in St. Louis, where he wants to learn to be a mechanic.

"I want to get promoted to a position of leadership in the Guard," Campbell said. "I want to learn how to be a Soldier and then train others."

Campbell is supported in his decision to join the Guard by his father, Charles Campbell of Bonne Terre.
