Control blowing trash, junk

In my many trips to the airport from Jackson, I notice how much trash and junk is along the sides of Interstate 55. I see the never-ending efforts of the state to clean up the mess and two weeks later again needing to be cleaned. I wonder what the cost might be statewide.

If you notice the trash, it is all types of things that normally would not be thrown from automobiles. It is very rare to see someone actually throw something from a vehicle other than a cigarette butt.

I followed a pickup truck from the East Main Street interchange to Route K and could not believe how much trash came from the back of the truck. Some of the items were aluminum cans, plastic bags, a cardboard box, some flat cardboard, candy wrappers and probably 25 foam soda cups.

If people are going to haul trash loose in the bed of trucks, it should be covered with a net of some kind to keep it in. The cost of a net to keep trash in would be small compared to cost of removing trash from the roadway.

Surely something could be done to reduce the amount of trash along our highway system.
