Southeast roundup: Eastern Illinois completes softball sweep
Thursday, April 15, 2010
The Southeast Missouri State softball team suffered a 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference loss at Eastern Illinois on Wednesday.
EIU, which earlier this year won both ends of a doubleheader at Southeast, swept a three-game OVC series for the first time since joining the league in 1997.
Southeast fell to 13-22 overall and 4-10 in OVC play to remain last in the 10-team conference. EIU is 20-17 and 10-4.
The Panthers scored both runs in the first inning, taking advantage of consecutive one-out walks by Stefanie Barnes. Hailee Hanna delivered a two-run single with two outs.
Barnes shut down the Panthers the rest of the way, walking just one more batter and finishing with a four-hitter. She struck out four.
Southeast had six hits against EIU's Amber May, but the Redhawks stranded 10 runners and twice failed to capitalize on bases-loaded, one-out opportunities. May struck out seven and walked one.
Shelby Stein led Southeast with two hits as she extended her career-best hitting streak to eight games.
Southeast resumes OVC play this weekend at first-year program Murray State. There will be a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
Colbert honored again
Southeast senior Brandon Colbert was named OVC male track and field athlete of the week for the second straight week and the third time this outdoor season.
Colbert recorded three top-10 finishes last weekend at the Ole Miss Invitational, including winning his second straight shot put title and third of the season.
Colbert also was third in the hammer throw and sixth in the discus. He has the OVC's top distances this year in the shot put and discus while ranking second in the hammer.
Southeast returns to action Saturday at the Memphis Invitational.
