Hooked on Science: Water drops on a penny

Thursday, April 15, 2010

How many drops of water can you put on a penny?

* Penny

* Water

* Medicine dropper

STEP 1: Using the medicine dropper, place drops of water on the penny.

How many drops of water were you able to place on the penny? There are about 839 quintillion molecules in a drop of water. The molecules stick together, creating surface tension. You can break this surface tension by adding a drop of soap to the water on the penny.
