Saint Francis Unveils New Hospitality Area for Families of Critical Patients

The Critical Care Family Room at Saint Francis Medical Center provides a a new, convenient and restful area in which families may spend time during their loved one’s illness.

Families of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Saint Francis Medical Center have a new, convenient and restful area in which to spend time during their loved one's illness. The Critical Care Family Room is Saint Francis' commitment to families and the comprehensive care required for these critical patients.

"Family support is an essential component to recovery for our most seriously ill patients," says Jeannie Fadler, Vice President -- Patient Care Services. "It is important that we encourage this support by offering a warm, comfortable space for families to gather during what is typically a very stressful time."

The Family Room, which opened January 4, is centrally located on the main floor of the Medical Center, with convenient access to the ICU and CCU on the same floor. With limited sleeping provisions for family members who prefer to stay overnight, the Family Room features three private restrooms and a shower, new furnishings, tile floors, coffee service, and large windows that welcome the abundant natural light. Complimentary technology offerings include computers with Internet access, a flat-screen TV and personal lockers. The Medical Center's chapel and a vending area with 24-hour food access also are nearby.

"Having a loved one in the ICU or CCU is a trying time for families, especially if it is not feasible for them to go home each night," says Laura Dumey, RN, MSN, TNS, BC, clinical director of Surgical and Critical Care Services. "The Critical Care Family Room provides a comfortable alternative that may make those waits a little easier."
