Four Southeast Missouri State University students were charged Tuesday in connection to the Dec. 13 assault of another college student at an off-campus house.

Antonio Garritano, 19, of Jackson was charged with first-degree burglary, a felony, and third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, according to Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle. Derek Gohn, 19, of Bridgeton, Mo.; Jared Goodson, 22, and Pili Showers, 21, both of Cape Girardeau, were also charged with first-degree burglary.

Garritano, Gohn and Goodson are listed on the university's football roster.

"These individuals will immediately be withheld from all athletically related activities until we have had a chance to review all available facts in this case," said Jeff Honza, director of Southeast sports information.

Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman Cpl. Adam Glueck said detectives are still following up on leads in the case. The investigation was initially slowed because many of the people involved were out of town for Christmas vacation.

"It's not over for right now," Glueck said of the investigation. "They do a thorough job, and sometimes it takes time."

Blake Carlton, 21, a junior international business major from St. Louis, said he was sleeping on the couch of the house at 1325 Dunklin St. when he was assaulted. He was thrown on a coffee table and later blacked out. His injuries included a black eye and a blow to the head.

According to a probable-cause affidavit by Cape Girardeau police Detective Keith Green, Brett Jones, another football player who has been charged in the case, said he saw Garritano hit Carlton as many as 16 times and that Garritano insisted via text message during Christmas break that Jones take the blame.

Jones, 18, of St. Clair, Mo., was charged with first-degree burglary and third-degree assault Jan. 26.

When he was arrested Jan. 25, Jones admitted he had entered the house and punched Carlton one time with his fist, according to the affidavit. While being interviewed by Green again Feb. 5, Jones said he, Gohn, Goodson, Garritano, and Showers all went to and entered the Dunklin Street residence together.

According to the affidavit, Jones said he didn't see anyone but Garritano strike Carlton and that he saw Goodson throw a bottle and make a mess in the house. Gohn, he told Green, flipped over a table.

Bond for Gohn, Goodson and Showers is set at $10,000 cash only. Bond for Garritano is set at $35,000 cash only.

Too bad they don't hit like that on the field . . . they'd win more games!!!!

Four guys beating up one one sleeping guy? Wow, you guys are real men. All should be dropped from SEMO completely. What a bunch of candy butts.

TOO FUNNY!!!!!! Me thinks itz time ta clean house from zee top to zee bottum of the football program....It seems as though it is out of control.

-- Posted by Iliketoeat on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 4:44 PM

The only reason this has gotten so much publicity is because they are athletes. If it was just a regular student no one would have anything to say and it wouldnt of gotten such attention. The hateful comments are not necessary. Wether they have done this or not they are just teens who need support and understanding.

-- Posted by christy parmentier on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 5:13 PM

Christy, what the ?? Teenagers who need coddling and love?? Hardly. These young men ages 19-22 isn't it are no longer teens and boys. They are adults by law and their actions are what is being published. Men, Christy undet the law in the city and county of cape girardeau, the state of Missouri, and the country of the United States. The articles about those cooking meth and beating up women are adults as well did you complain? The fact is that this group of young men have brokne the law, caused someone injury and did it in a gang-like situation where is it fair Christy to go four or five against one person who was sleeping and not aware of the invasion into his home? How about you go to bed and maybe we can set up something so that we will have four or five young men the same size etc. to come in and beat you up? What would these four or fivc young men be to you? What is your size Christy? How about four or five young men beating you up as you sleep? Then what will these men be TEENS? I doubt it.

-- Posted by adriana on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 5:25 PM

These are football players. They are adults. They might need help but they broke the law and will pay for it. Buy the way does Garritano lose his schlorship to SEMO. ??? This isn't his first brush with the law. All should be scrapped from the team.

-- Posted by Jackson2011 on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 5:45 PM

Hmmmmm....SEMO said it was okay to cut the budget on academics, but they didn't want to cut athletics budget so they could support people like this???? I think that sealed the deal regarding my child's choice to go to another university.

-- Posted by seriouslyspeaking on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 5:48 PM

With losers like these no wonder the football team has a record that stinks!!!

-- Posted by Glock_23 on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 6:00 PM

Don't know which is worse, the two losers the other day charged with meth lab operation or these 4 losers beating and stealing from a sleeping student. I knew the Garritano dude is a loser, and I guess losers befriend losers. I sure hope they are sent to the penetentiary to learn some humility. I'm sure they will learn some from their new room mate BUBBA, the 5 time violent felon that has a taste for the love of fresh young boys in the prison courtyard. I rejoice in their convictions of this cowardly crime. They must have come to the realization that they will all be destined to be ditch diggers with their low IQ's and poor motivational skills and decided to try to make a few bucks as outlaws. How pitiful they are!

-- Posted by mongengineer on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 6:09 PM

Wondering why they jumped him though.

Over a girl? Over an earlier fight? There had to have been a motive. I'm sure it will all be handled eventually. It's bad publicity for the football program though, which is sad....and Christy, you may have been right that it is made a bigger deal because they are athletes, but that comes with the territory of being athletes. They didn't just let down their friends and family by this, they also let down their team, their university, and the alumni that support them. That is why it's a bigger news story. No, they don't deserve to be coddled or loved over it...It's a shame, and they will get their day in court and it will be handled and everyone will move on. But it isn't a time to hug them and make them feel better.

-- Posted by CMGCEO on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 6:28 PM

Athletes or not, justice should be served!!! What were they trying to solve, breaking in, beating someone up and destroying someone's home doesn't solve anything whatever the reason was!!! If the victim was my son I was pay whatever it took to see that each of the "men" involved were convicted! This does nothing but hurt the University, Football program, Cape Girardeau, and parents who are considering sending their child to school there. Its sad that someone would think that this crime would solve anything!!! A girl...whatever, its opens my eyes as to what type of young men are out there and could do such a thing. My son looks up to these athletes, WOW!!!!

-- Posted by southern_belle on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 7:00 PM

Sad, so sad. Sometimes the bigest lesson's are the one's that hurt the most. One bad decision can end a career or in some cases a life, at the very least distroy a reputation.

Thankfully no one died in this case and possible other's will learn from this story. These young men will be judged in a fair trial based on thier prior history and performance in society. The cost will be high no mater what the sentence turn's out to be IF they are convicted.

None of us are guilty until the gavel goes down, except in the press.

Unfortunately we all get a black eye on this one no mater what the outcome.

-- Posted by DORK on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 8:05 PM

I guess the saddest thing abut this whole mess is the attitudes that people have that mirror old bleeding heart Christy. Every citizen in this country should be armed in his or her own home to protect themselves so we as a society can prevent wasted court cases on vermin like the four juvenile delinquents in this case. It sure is a shame that they didn't try and break into my house cause there wouldn't be a need to try four dead losers layin on my living room floor. Why do you think our prison system is overflowing? It is because the American citizen has lost control of his own protection and existence in his own home. Come on thugs, break into my home, I DARE YOU!

-- Posted by mongengineer on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 9:36 PM

I am glad they finally found the others who were involved. About time they get caught rather than letting them continue to go around thinking they are all big and bad. Some people just need to be put into their place and know they can't walk over everyone like they think. Esp the one from Jackson....from what has happened--with charges like these they shouldn' be allowed back on the team or even an athletic scholarship at that...that is if it was even offered.

-- Posted by JacksonSEMO on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 9:53 PM

If this happened to someone just randomly that wasn't on a college athletic team or that had a bad record they wouldnt be given choices or anything, they would have to pay the time and serve what they are handed for their actions. There should be NO difference for these idiots!

-- Posted by JacksonSEMO on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 9:55 PM

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Garritano get kicked off his high school basketball team because of a fight during a game?

-- Posted by SEMissouri70 on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 10:03 PM

He punched a kid in the face as they were running up the court. At that point Jackson was up 40 and in the 4th quarter. The kid he hit was about 5-10 just running up the court. Guess he deserved it.

-- Posted by Dr._Will_B._Inebreated on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 10:35 PM

What a pity SEMO did not have Miss Nellie Kreuger (Franklin School's first and long time principal). She was well known to possess a wicked paddle and was not remiss in the application of its intended use.

Progressive education did not serve these overgrown brats well in their earlier years, even less so now. The same may very well might be said of their parents.

If found guilty, the rest of their lives will be marred and marked for one foolish and stupid act. What a waste.

-- Posted by voyager on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 12:39 AM

This is sad since MR. Gohn is on supevised probation for a felony he recieved an SIS in that case on 6/6/09 and MR Garritano is on probation for a misdemeanor he recieved on 5/12/08. The other two people this seems to be there first offense(I Love Case Net) If they did this and are found guilty it will ruin all the time and money that was spent on there education since all 4 may receive felonies and in missouri a felony will keep you from getting hired and with the job market the way it is why would you take that risk. Companies can refuse to hire a person in Missouri if they are on probation or parole.

-- Posted by looking4fun2 on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 3:25 AM

seriouslyspeaking, It has been felt in the academic field at SE and many otehr campuses that a university is for academics and learning is the main part of any university. For too many years SE has been catering to athletes which such a small percent of the environment there. Just like Jackson's school district. Money is funneled into the athletic department like it is easy to come by for such a samllpercent of a school's population we then produce non-producers and neglected kids who attened to learn not to play games that will get them nowhere in the reaql world.

-- Posted by RCIR on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 8:11 AM

It is much like the incident in 90's when a group of football players assaulted a student on campus with an empty 40 ounce bottle. He was in the hospital with substantial injuries. No action was taken; as the star running back for the Indians was diretly involved.

-- Posted by redhawkalum on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 8:11 AM

adriana, I'm still waiting to see that money "funneled" into the athletic department. Oh wait, it's not happening at SEMO.

-- Posted by redhawkstudent on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 8:28 AM

What I still don't understand why do people "look up" to athletes in this country? Why did someone become a hero because they can play a sport???? Just because you can throw a ball doesnt mean you have a good charater. Kick them off the team. Send them to court like you would anyone else. End of story. Then quite putting your "respect" in someone just because they are an athlete.

-- Posted by WhatRPeopleThinking on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 8:38 AM

Well since SEMO's football team was so incredibly amazing, I don't think anyone looked up to these athletes and most certainly won't now. Hopefully they just turn into jailbirds and pay the price they should pay now.

-- Posted by JacksonSEMO on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 9:33 AM

Why did Samuels recruit/sign this trash?? This is what the program has degenerated to, unfortunately. A couple of these kids are on probation! The kid from Jackson has a history of evil--Tony, do u live/recruit in a vacum?? Kick them off the team NOW. Any, repeat ANY, student Ms Parmentier, who represents the university in an official capacity, and certainly a "paid" one as in this situation should be held to a higher standard. Liberalism - the downfall of the United States.......

Do you not just love the defiant glare of suspect Garritano?

Fools, all.

-- Posted by Hawker on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 10:45 AM

Ok, enough is enough, these students should be striped of their scholarships, and expelled immediately from the University. There was a time when student athletics where honored, and deserved the credit given to them, but no more! Between the coaches at SEMO who make more bmoney than they deserve (as obivious by their records) to the fact that the players themselves seem to think that they are above the law. It is now time to clean out this area, starting at the top.

-- Posted by billsheppard52@gmail.com on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 10:56 AM

It is funny that people take one side of a story and run with it. I dont believe you all heard about the "criminal" Brett Jones getting jumped by the "victim" earlier in the night before the criminal act took place. Because of the acts of few you ALL talk trash about semo football this and semo football that. There are players on that team with a clean record that bust there ***'s year long to do well in school as well as on the field to be critiqued by people like you! who jump on a story and ride it all the way home. I do believe that the acts that these athletes have committed were most definitely wrong and yes do deserve to be punished, but for everyone on a football program to have to hear and read that people dont want the team anymore because of a few players? that's a joke. Reverse the situation, if a single football player was at home alone and fraternity guys broke into his house and beat him would any of you have any remorse?? most likely not.Dont forget many of you probably played a sport that you loved very much and gave your everything to! And all your surrounding community could do is talk trash about your team and how they should get ride of it.

-- Posted by observerOVC on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 12:04 PM

I think it's a big shame that this story is drawing so much negative attention to the university and it's athletic programs. There's no denying that what occured was wrong and these players need to be punished, but in no way does this reflect the majority of student athletes at SEMO. It's stories like this that do nothing by hurt the image of SEMO athletics and bring validation to statements like, SEMO sucks, or SEMO is terrible. Things like this detract from all the successes of the other athletes and draw attention away from all the good that they do. The majority of us are hard working, dedicated, focused, and driven to suceed, and it's embarassing to think that I could be classified in the same group as these criminals.

SAD THAT THE WORLD HAS COME TO THIS KIND OF STUFF

-- Posted by USER321 on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 12:46 PM

Hey observerOVC, you said it right, so many people only look at one side. There are really good kids on the team, with good grades, and are good people.

-- Posted by TPerze on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 12:54 PM

None of these kids have seen any gametime. Three freshman and a senior, cut them from the team and use their scholarships for div. 1 transfers. These guys are not an example of the quality of kids we have on our teams. This type of problem goes on everywhere, you just don't hear about it.

-- Posted by alum90 on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 1:23 PM

Another Black eye for Tony Samuel...how many can he take without getting the boot???

-- Posted by RedShirt on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 2:00 PM

Nice to see that these kids have been out of jail for so long, but yet, Judge Gary Kamp gives them a bond of $30000 cash only. Where are they going to go? This offense happened last month, so why the harsh bond.

But yet, Kamp lets Jason Robert out of jail on $5000. This is the same person that tried to cut his girlfriends tongue out, told the police that he would kill everyone that tried to keep him away from his kids, and beat the tar out of his girlfriend, but by all means, lets put him out on the streets!!

WTF?? At least keep it consistent.

-- Posted by cartman on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 4:09 PM

Good recruting tool for Samuels:

Chance to play sooner for incoming freshmen.

-- Posted by grandma73 on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 6:05 PM

Oh I'm sure it isn't that bad for Garritano and Gohn. Given their non-existent work histories and felony convictions, they can still probably find good jobs in the fast food service or city waste management industries, or maybe even try and find a remotely located village of Somali pirates that will take them in as recruits. But it will have to be a remote village that doesn't have internet access to Missouricase.net. LOL I am so funny, I crack myself up. To say that I have no sympathy for these guys would be a gross understatement. Of course they will be in the paper again next year as being charged with drug trafficking because they can't find a job doing anything else. Surprising how a couple bad decisions will ruin the rest or your life.

-- Posted by mongengineer on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 6:08 PM

I believe there are kids on this football program that bring good publicity to the program and a lot of the players who encourage positive actions/ opportunities for themselves and other players, and not all are bad kids. But to bring into this matter that semo football should be cut is a joke. Semo football brings money to the other athletic departments and is a tradition. Maybe you who doubt that need to realize that programs go through rough times! Yeah we have had a few bad season. But things can change at the drop of a hat. Support for all athletics is very important. I know that players did not come out here from Texas, Arizona, California and Florida to just get into trouble and fights! They came to make this program better and play a sport they love. The players who did this act should and are being punished! But the players who did not do this are also getting punished by all of you who talk bad about down about there program, them as players, and judge there character individually without knowing them! That is not fair, one bit.

-- Posted by observerOVC on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 6:09 PM

I Antonio Garritano has to have help beating people up when he can't even beat up someone that 5'6". I guess that what SE is lookin for in players. WEAK!!!!!!

-- Posted by hammonds_20 on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 7:17 PM

This is obviously a by-product of the name change from Indians to Redhawks. Being an Indian inculcates a certain sense of dignity. Being a Redhawk encourages one to be a predator. Bring back the Indians!

-- Posted by Mark Rutledge on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 7:19 PM

Garritano deserves alot. Last time I was at the players house he pulled a gun on his ex. What kind of people does semo have one their team?

-- Posted by Semochica07 on Wed, Feb 10, 2010, at 11:10 PM

Granny ..Recruiting tool for Samuels?? Do you really think the headlines: "Three more SEMO football players charged in alleged assault" will get top atheletes to want to play at Southeast? And isn't it wonderful this will give incoming freshmen a chance to play sooner?

This whole affair is sad ..Very sad. It wouldn't be a recruiting advantage for any coach, especially one that can't seem to come up with a winning season in four years ..nor is it an opportunity for freshmen. The one positive out of this whole debacle is now maybe Samuels will keep a tighter reign over the boozing and partying that his team does. The partying is completely out of hand. He can say the players are adults and are responsible for their actions, but it's his team and he owns it.

The real story is this kid that got beat up was part of a group that beat up one of the freshman football playesr ..and so some of the team visited him for a little revenge. Not a smart thing to do considering they broke more laws than the original punks ..and now if convicted they will pay dearly. I just hope everyone in court will look at the whole story and understand that both sides were wrong.

Most of the SEMO football players are outstanding people. Please don't berate the whole team because of the foolish actions of a few..

-- Posted by bigsemofan on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 1:02 AM

I am not saying that the law won't handle this, but if you only have half of a story how can you judge? They have police and alleged victims story what about the accused. They have a side also. So unless we were there how are we to know how anything went down. Maybe they should not of sought revenge but instead went to the law, then maybe there would of been no story in the paper and none of this silly stuff. I am not a bleeding heart i just believe everyone is innocent until proven guilty and my problem is you convicting them before time. And not trying to coddle just not playing God and judging them

-- Posted by christy parmentier on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 10:20 AM

Tony Samuel is a disciple of Tom Osborne. I am amazed we haven't had more kids arrested in his tenure. Apples don't fall far from trees in Lincoln.

-- Posted by bobby_hill on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 10:47 AM

I've read these comments and I would just like to say that EVERYONE is INNOCENT until proven guilty.

There are 2 sides to a story and each should be heard. I only hope that the truth comes out and that you harda---- never have to go through what the family of these boys are experiencing. I know 2 of the boys are on probation, but 20 years ago kids were allowed to make mistakes and today they are not without breaking the law. Did you know that science has proven that kids in their teens have brains that are NOT developed enough to make smart decisions. Lets not ruin someone's life for making a spur of the moment decision to get revenge for their teammate.
