Trash deadline

The Cape Girardeau Public Works Department is preparing for a new trash and recycling system. Even though the new services aren't scheduled to begin until May 1, city residents need to learn about the new system. And if they want smaller trash containers, today is the deadline for contacting the city (339-6351).

The plan is to distribute two containers: a 68-gallon bin for garbage and a 96-gallon bin for recycling. Households with only one or two occupants can request smaller 48-gallon bins to replace one or both of the larger bins.

The new bins have wheels and hinged lids. But some city residents may be concerned about getting the bins to the curb on garbage and recycling pickup days. They may obtain a form to be filled out by a physician and returned to the city to request help with moving the bins. Call 339-6322 to get a form.

The city recently mailed brochures about the new garbage and recycling service. The brochure answered questions most likely to be asked by residential trash customers. But if you have other questions, or if you did not receive a brochure, or if you received a brochure but didn't keep it, call the public works department (339-6351).
