The Jackson Indians handled Sikeston's pressure perfectly in the opening minutes of the game.
Then the Bulldogs' pressure took over.
Sikeston's defense led to an 86-46 win over Jackson on Tuesday night at Jackson High School.
"It's not too bad at first," Jackson junior Bobby Clark said of Sikeston's pressure. "Then they keep coming. They keep wearing on you and they are always in your face, and it gets tough."
The Indians (11-8, 0-3) got off to a hot start.
Tyler Rhodes buried a 3-pointer and Clark hit a jumper to give Jackson a 5-0 lead.
"We played well early," Jackson coach Darrin Scott said. "We got the ball moving quick and found open shots and knocked them down. John Meyer altered some shots and protected the basket, and we were rebounding."
Sikeston (15-1, 3-1) responded to tie the game at 7-7, and JuQualin Wiggins hit a jumper with 3:34 remaining for a 9-7 lead the Bulldogs never relinquished.
"Our kids had good pressure," Sikeston coach Greg Holifield said. "They pressured the ball well and created turnovers. Coach Scott always has his team well prepared, and they were again tonight."
Sikeston led 15-12 when it went on its first big run.
Janeil Hatchett drained a 3-pointer and made a layup as Sikeston close the quarter with a 5-0 burst and an 18-12 lead.
Sikeston then scored the first nine points of the second quarter to complete a 14-0 run. Will Holifield knocked down a trey, Hatchett scored back-to-back buckets, and Eli Jackson scored a layup as Sikeston stretched the lead to 29-12.
"That was huge," Scott said. "We lost concentration. We made some poor decisions and they took advantage of it. They opened the quarter on a big run and closed on a big run."
Jackson cut the lead to 33-21 on two baskets by Meyer, but Sikeston pounced again.
Darryl Howard hit a jumper, and Corey Porter and Wiggins scored on layups as Sikeston went up 39-21 at halftime.
The Bulldogs' full-court pressure consistently forced turnovers.
Their offense was equally aggressive, attacking the rim on most possessions.
"Their defense is good," Scott said. "But their offensive, I think, is what hurt us more. They get out so fast and spread the floor and attack the rim at all times. It wore on us."
The second half saw Sikeston pull away.
The Bulldogs outscored the Indians 27-15 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Clark scored 14 points in an otherwise low-scoring attack for Jackson.
"He had to handle the ball more tonight," Scott said of Clark. "We did a good job of catching it high post. He didn't force, but he was aggressive when he needed to be. He competed tonight."
Hatchett led the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points.
The Indians played short-handed, missing three starters and six players overall.

TIME FOR A NEW COACH. COACH SCOTT IS KILLING THE PROGRAM. JUST ASK SOME KIDS FROM WHEN HE WAS COACH AT NOTRE DAME. THEY WILL TELL YOU HE KILLED THIER PROGRAM ALSO!
where was keith, H. williams, and mcdowell. didn't see them in the highlights or in the scoring column. are they sick or hurt?
They were on the bench, not even dressed out. Those 3 and several others got into some trouble and were not allowed to play.
I thought they did pretty good, considering they had six JV players moved up to play varsity. Blame that loss on the players sitting the bench in street clothes.
Why blame anyone? It was apparently a strong performance by Sikeston.
Discipline problems at Jackson??? NO WAY!!
Just to save anyone from blaming anyone else, I think Sikeston still would have won by 30 if Jackson had all of their players in the game.
Just like every sport in Jackson the athletes are not judge on their ability but on what their parents can do for the coach. A poor or non-ranking family in Jackson has little or no chance to shine, that's why many athletes have had to move to other schools to show their abilities. Not to mention the HUGE egos some of these parents have. FYI, your kids are not as good as you think they are.
Coach Scott is killing Jackson basketball, he cannot motivate the players and he has lost their respect several things have happened in the past year or so especially while away at a camp in st.louis players left unattended by coaches and other things that seemed to never be brought forward by players for fear of retaliation. Players that did not play were found to be at a drinking party held by Henrie Williams and a former Jackson player (poor choices) but this sometimes happens with young men and women. The talent level in Jackson is there but Coach Scott has not been able to get the best out of these young men. He already ran off multiple players from last years teams, someone should ask why 6 or 7 of the players from last years varsity and junior varsity are not playing this year. Come school board step up and cut your losses before its to late. Sikeston played well and are definately the better team with or without Jackson's full arsenal.
Right on!! I agree with those comments completely. There were also several complaints last year made to the athletic director which were supposed to be passed on to the school board. Apparently he "forgot" for the school board was not enlightened one little bit about the behavior of "Coach" Scott toward his varsity players. His behavior as well as his choice of vocabulary to his team left a lot to be desired last year and as far as we can tell, the same still applies to this year. Jackson made a colossal mistake when they hired what Notre Dame let go. By the way, have you noticed how good Notre Dame's program has been since he left?
It seems coaches in the past have been dismissed, I mean left Jackson for less than what is going on while Scott is in command. I wish the Jackson board would do a full blown investigation of the athletic director and coach scott, the AD has been made aware of things that he has swept under the rug. Maybe the missourian could do a Q & A session to get some clarity on what is going on with the Jackson program.
