Portageville police investigating string of suspicious fires

Friday, December 18, 2009
PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. - A series of fires is under investigation by the Portageville Police Department.

Portageville police chief Ronnie Adams described the blazes as "suspicious" in nature. He noted none of the buildings had electrical service and the cause of the blazes has yet to be determined.

The first fire occurred Tuesday night at 202 Brown Acres. Adams reported a two-story vacant house was destroyed by fire.

At 3:15 a.m. Wednesday at 710 Warren St., a fire was discovered in a shed, where sound and stereo equipment was being stored. According to the police chief, the fire spread to the adjacent house, damaging a corner of the building before being extinguished by fire personnel.

Another fire was reported at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday at a shed at 409 W. Fifth St. The shed served as storage for some antique furniture, according to the report.

All the buildings were destroyed by the fires, Adams said.

The investigation is continuing into the fires. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police Department at 573-379-5500.
