Air show returns

The nation's economic recession has had an impact on this area's economy, including the cancellation of this year's air show at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport. Now there's some good news: The air show will be held next year, thanks in large part to a commitment from the U.S. Navy Blue Angels precision flying team.

In addition, the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team is lined up for Cape Girardeau's show, which is scheduled for June 19 and 20 and which will again salute area veterans.

The Blue Angels last performed here in 1992. During 2010, the flying team is slated to perform 67 shows at 35 locations. The team draws attention to naval aviation and attracts potential recruits. Best of all, it wows audiences with its breathtaking aerial maneuvers.

This year, airport manager Bruce Loy will be assisted with air show planning by Mark Seesing, a member of the city's airport advisory board. In addition, volunteers will pitch in to help with preparations.

The air show is expected to cost $170,000 and relies on sponsorships from generous businesses and individuals.

The return of the air show will be a big boost for the area's aviation fans.
