Police investigating death of former Southeast Missouri sheriff

Friday, December 11, 2009
MALDEN, Mo. -- The Dunklin County Major Case Squad was activated earlier this week to investigate the October death of former Butler County Sheriff Sam Gilmore.

According to Malden Police Chief Jarrett Bullock, there is an ongoing investigation into Gilmore's death by the Malden Police Department and Dunklin County Major Case Squad, which consists of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and its Division of Drug and Crime Control.

Gilmore, 53, died Oct. 19 at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter, Mo.

A subsequent autopsy has revealed Gilmore's death was attributed to liver and kidney poisoning as a result of him having ingested antifreeze, according to authorities.

Two search warrants were served on Malden locations this week and evidence was seized.

That evidence, according to the patrol, will undergo examination by the major case squad and the patrol crime laboratory in Jefferson City.

Gilmore, who served as Butler County sheriff in 1997, resided at 1313 Merritt St. and owned Sam's Place Bar & Grill on Madison Street in downtown Malden

Bullock said the investigation of Gilmore's death has been going on for about two to three days. No further details about the investigation, he said, are being released at this time.
