High school roundup: Hornets swarm Malden in tourney

Advance junior Grant Gray opened the Hornets' high school boys basketball season in style, hitting for 41 points in a first-round victory against Malden in the Oran Tournament.

Gray hit nine 3-pointers and nearly matched the Green Wave's team total as second-seeded Advance won 69-44.

No other Advance players finished in double-figure scoring as teammate Darren VanGennip was next in line with seven point.

Quentin Jackson led seventh-seeded Malden with 18 points.

In another first-round game, top-seeded Scott County Central stormed to a 94-37 win over eighth-seeded Bell City.

Scott County took a 30-16 lead into the second quarter, where it blanked the Cubs 26-0 for a 56-16 halftime advantage.

Otto Porter paced the Cubs with 36 points. Bobby Hatchett finished with 17 points, Stewart Johnson had 14 and Trey Johnson netted 11.

Terrence Johnson scored 13 points for Bell City.

The other first-round matchup saw No. 3 Richland slip past No. 6 Twin Rivers 66-64.

Scott County Central will play tonight's Oran-Kelly winner in the semifinals.

The Crusaders had four players finish in double-figure scoring at they opened the season with a victory in the Crystal City Invitational.

Brayton Klaus netted 17 points to lead Saxony, while Trevor Mabuce had 14, Kris Cook had 13 and Trent Steffens added 10.

The Crusaders built a 38-12 lead by halftime.

Central opened its season with a victory in the Northwest Invitational.

Sadie Pittman scored 16 points to lead the Tigers and Chelsea Pannier added 12 points.

Pittman and Chelsea Vinson each had eight rebounds for the Tigers.

Central trailed 23-19 at halftime, but the Tigers rallied to take a 31-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
