ND's Young signs letter with Tennessee-Martin

Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Notre Dame senior Colton Young signed a letter of intent recently to play baseball at OVC member Tennessee-Martin.

Young played a key role in Notre Dame winning the Class 3 state championship in 2009. He compiled an 11-0 record on the mound for the Bulldogs, who finished with a 29-1 record. He struck out 98 batters in 71 1/3 innings and posted a 0.79 ERA. He helped Notre Dame into the title game as he pitched a complete game in a 5-1 victory over Harrisonville in the Class 3 semifinals.

"He was our horse last year, and he'll obviously be our guy on the mound this year," Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett said.

Young was selected first-team all-state after his junior season in which he also batted .389 and scored 35 runs. He also has been the starting shortstop for the Bulldogs the past two years.

Graviett said Young was wanting to be a two-way player in college, and apparently UTM provided that opportunity.

"We plan on using him as a middle infielder and as a pitcher," UTM coach Bubba Cates said in a news release on the university's website.
