*** Nuisance cats

TO the cat owners living in and around our subdivision on Route D: Be responsible for the numerous cats you've brought to the neighborhood and turned loose. For the past few years I've tolerated your cats making messes in my yard, climbing on my vehicles, smelling up my porch and being a nuisance on a daily basis. If this doesn't stop soon, you'll need to pick your cats up at the animal shelter or I'll relocate them to a family that is responsible. If you can't be responsible, you don't need pets.

*** Courthouse insurance

CAN the Cape Girardeau County commissioners tell me why they have changed the contract that will require the Girl Scouts to buy an insurance policy to hold their luminaria ceremony at the courthouse the evening of the Jackson Christmas parade? These young girls sing Christmas carols and collect gloves, hats and scarves for the poor. They have been doing this for 25 or 30 years. I pay approximately $50,000 a year in real estate taxes. Is that enough to cover the insurance? What's going to burn? The sidewalks are concrete, and the courthouse is stone. I thought the courthouse belonged to the taxpayers. The commission may have standing room only for its first night meeting Dec. 7. I hope they will rethink this decision.

*** China business

WHICH country manufactures the highest quality goods on earth today? Which country will it be tomorrow? How about the United States? In the past, it was Germany and then Japan. I think the U.S. should set a goal for itself for the future. Whom do we need to trade with? China. Marketing firms need to study Chinese history and culture so we can produce new products for the Chinese people as well as products that have been retail icons. We should hire Chinese shipping firms for delivery. We should also invest in retail properties and buildings in China as well.

*** Heartbreaking wars

IT makes me wonder if we're in another Vietnam era. I think it's time to bring our boys home. Wars don't solve anything. They just break hearts.

*** Special needs

REGARDING budget cuts and getting rid of special-needs aides: I work in a special-needs room and see the need for aides. They are there to ensure a safe environment for a special-needs child and as to make sure that child is successful in school. Some aides have more than one child at a time if the children are higher functioning.

*** History's story

NOTHING new under the sun: "All history is one long story to this effect: men have struggled for power over their fellow men in order that they might win the joys of earth at the expense of others, might shift the burdens of life from their own shoulders upon those of others." -- William Graham Sumner (1840-1910), American academic and professor at Yale College.

*** Better care, more jobs

I would like to comment on Byron York's column regarding jobs in America. I agree with him on one count. Jobs should take top priority right now. There is some contradiction in his column, though. How can he argue that the administration shouldn't be focusing on health care? On that very same page in Speak Out, someone questioned where we were going to get the doctors to cover the increased demand provided by more Americans with health care coverage. That is a good question. Another good question might be, "Where will we get all of the support staff that the doctors need to safely and effectively take care of these new patients?" There will be an increased demand for RNs, nurse's aides, office staff, food service workers and custodial staff at all of our nation's hospitals, radiology centers, labs and doctors' offices. Health care facilities will have to be expanded. This would create construction jobs. More Americans with access to health care will surely translate into more jobs for American people. Let me say it clearly for all to hear: The majority of the American people want this health care bill to pass.

Regarding cats: Pet owners, for the sake of your pets, please be responsible. Our family recently adopted a kitten that was running loose in the neighborhood. We knew she wouldn't stand a chance against Highway K or the coyotes.

Of course we want the healthcare bill to pass....and it IS going to pass. Everyone sees the need for it and it is time the richest country in the world help take care of the people who slaved and worked their butts off to make the rich richer. All this bickering about how much it will cost is nothing compared to what it is going to cost us in the long run if we do not start taking care of our own. All this propaganda about high taxes and putting our grandchildren in debt....that is going to happen anyway. Each generation always pays more than the previous generation....duh!!!!

And what happens when they can't pay it. It is getting to that point quick. We are in the far side apathy part and crossing to dependence. Read below:

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: "from bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; (Cadi.. Tell me if you got this far or I will know you didn't read it...) From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage."

Nuisance Cats: Oddly enough, many humans seem to believe that their domestic cats have a sort of 'constitutional right' to roam outside. Actually, I suspect the owners just don't want to deal with Cat Litter Duty ... Be nice though if those cat owners would be willing to deal with paying people for repairs to the cat-claw-damaged car hoods and trunks ...

"The majority of the American people want this health care bill to pass."

Actually ... the majority of Americans seem to want A health care bill to pass ... Unfortunately, they are willing to accept ANY health care bill, no matter how intrusive or convoluted or expensive it may be, in the hope that it may benefit them individually.

Really it is 40% and I am sure it is exaggerated.

The same people that call anyone that has worked their tails off greedy because the drive a new truck or have a nice home are the ones that would crash the economy of the US. To get it.

Re: Courthouse insurance

What kind of insurance? Suggest that a mix of young'uns, fire, and flammables sum up to a potentionally dangerous situation for which the landowner could be held liable for personal injury, should something go awry.

And - good grief - $50K in real estate taxes? Hmm, that would put an estimated total market value somewheres in the neighborhood of $3 - $5 million? Perhaps too much news, or a slipped decimal point in here somewheres. Guessing that the proposed 1/2-cent sales tax increase for TTF-4 isn't much of a concern for this caller, relatively speaking. :-)~

Re: China business

Reminds me of the scene in 'Back to the Future' where Doc from 1955 knows Japanese stuff as junk, but Marty from 1985 knows Japanese stuff only as quality.

Bought a vehicle OBD-II diagnostic test kit here recently, made in China - the cables have labels stating "Contains lead, wash hands after use". Say what?

Re: Better care, more jobs

The demand may rise, but will the supply follow in-step? - following an assumption that the promised cost controls would extend to the salary and benefit packages for these learned professionals. At any rate, it sounds like the caller is trumpeting a form of 'trickle-down' economics - oooooh, who said that? Bad fxpwt! :-)~

"The majority of the American people..." Hmm, wonder if that shouldn't be "the majority of people in America"? - a fine point differentiating between a proud heritage and a mere location.
