Southeast Missouri teenager charged with rape of 89-year-old woman

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
DONIPHAN, Mo. -- A Doniphan teenager is to make his first court appearance today after being charged with raping an 89-year-old woman.

Christopher Casteel is to appear at 9 a.m. today before Associate Circuit Judge Thomas D. Swindle for arraignment.

Casteel, who is being held in the Doniphan City Jail on $500,000 bond, was charged Saturday by Ripley County Prosecuting Attorney Christopher Miller.

At about 4 p.m. Thursday, Deputy Earl Wheetley was contacted by staff at Ripley County Memorial Hospital about a woman who was reporting she had been raped.

The woman, according to Wheetley's probable-cause affidavit, reported she had been staying with a relative at a rural Doniphan residence.

Wheetley said the woman told him Casteel, who had been holding her on the floor, threw her onto the bed, causing her head to hit the window sill, and she lost consciousness for several hours.

When asked why she hadn't contacted authorities earlier, the woman said her relative did not believe anything had happened and would not allow her to call anyone, Wheetley said.

During a Friday interview at the sheriff's department, Wheetley said, Casteel admitted to having sex with the woman without her consent and voluntarily provided a swab for DNA comparison to the items taken from the crime scene.

Man just drop him off in Bollinger county, hand out his picture, and let them have fun hunting him.

Should the relatives who did not let the woman use a phone or out of the yard be charged with something?

This poor woman. At least the staff at the hospital finally got her some help. I would say that whoever would not let her use a telephone should be charged with elderly abuse.

The relative who refused to get help for the victim needs to be charged with neglect. That's ridiculous.

Hell yes they should be held accountable!

Elder abuse, obstruction of justice, tampering with evidence, kidnapping. . .well that's the stuff good ol' Morley would throw at em just to see what stuck. . .if he could

This boy needs to be castrated! If he's this mentally twisted as as a teenager, then I cannot believe he's going to be any better of a man - and I sure as @#&% don't want him fathering any children that the state (all of us hard-working missourians) will inevitably have to take care of!!

The authorities should look further into the finances of this elderly woman to see if they were being mishandled. I believe that taking advantage of an elderly person like that is a felony in the state of Missouri.

The relatives, not letting her make a phone call to contact anyone outside that home committed a kidnapping and if they are not charged it will be a great dis-justice to this lady. There is more than one culpable person in this. More than the sick kid. Those adults need to be sitting in jail right now as well. I pray this lady will be taken well care of the rest of the years of her life. It is awful that her family did this to her. As mentioned, they need to look into her finances. I imagine there is some clues there to why they held her against her will as well.
