Charges filed against man accused in Chaffee bomb threat

Friday, November 6, 2009
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- An 18-year-old Chaffee man was charged Thursday with making a false bomb threat against the Rhodes 101 convenience store, Chaffee police chief Jim Chambers said in a news release.

Cameron M. Gettings was charged with a single felony count. His bond was set at $5,000 cash only. He will make an initial appearance Tuesday in Benton, Mo., before Associate Circuit Judge Scott Horman.

In an earlier release, Chambers said the Chaffee Police Department received a 911 emergency call at 8:16 p.m. Wednesday claiming there was a bomb at the Rhodes 101 convenience store on Highway 77. The Rhodes store was evacuated along with an attached bingo parlor, with a total of about 120 people being removed from the two buildings, Chambers said. With help from the Chaffee Fire Department and the Scott County Sheriff's Department, the buildings were searched and no bomb was found, he said.

As the search was concluding, Chambers said investigators determined the call was a prank. The investigation turned up several juveniles, who were questioned about the call, and Gettings was arrested.

At the time of his arrest, Gettings was awaiting trial on misdemeanor charges of misuse of 911. That trial is set for early December.

I think the amount of flaming ash and second-hand smoke in the bingo hall posed a larger threat than any bomb.
