Notre Dame takes out Hillsboro 2-1 in semifinals

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

The Notre Dame boys soccer team is making a habit of working overtime in the Class 2 District 1 tournament.

That's fine with coach Brad Wittenborn as long as the Bulldogs keep winning.

Second-seeded Notre Dame outlasted third-seeded Hillsboro 2-1 in sudden-death penalty kicks during Tuesday night's semifinals in Farmington, Mo.

Notre Dame (13-12) will face host and top-seeded Farmington at 6 p.m. Thursday for the title.

Monday night, the Bulldogs beat De Soto 3-2 in overtime.

"We got back late last night and had to drive back up here again tonight, then played another long game," Wittenborn said. "I was really proud of the guys. I thought we played much better tonight than last night. Hillsboro has a good team."

Jake Pewitt scored with about seven minutes left in the second half, off an assist from Ke-Ke Kellum, to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead.

Hillsboro tied it with about five minutes left, and regulation ended 1-1.

Neither squad scored in two 15-minute overtime periods, which set the stage for penalty kicks.

"We had some good chances to score in the overtimes," Wittenborn said. "We put some pressure on them but we couldn't get one in."

Each team made four of its five penalty kicks, which forced sudden death. Tyler Buelow scored the game-winner for Notre Dame.

Farmington routed fifth-seeded Perryville 7-0 in the other semifinal, setting the stage for the championship matchup Thursday.

The Knights edged the Bulldogs early this season 1-0 in double-overtime.

Congrats to the Knights! It should be a great game on Thursday. Hope to see a big crowd for both schools.

PS: It'd be really great to see semoball.com cover Farmington and other schools in the Mineral Area.
