High school roundup: Bulldogs soccer team wins in OT

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
Notre Dame senior Joe Froemsdorf wasn't ready for his final season of high school soccer to end.

Froemsdorf took a pass from Jake Pewitt and deposited it in the goal to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-2 overtime victory against De Soto in their Class 2 District 1 opener Monday.

Pewitt scored twice and Froemsdorf earned an assist on Pewitt's first goal.

The Dragons opened the scoring about three minutes into the contest, but Pewitt tied it 1-1 before halftime.

Pewitt's second goal early in the second half came off a pass from Tyler Buelow, but De Soto scored with about 30 seconds left in regulation.

Froemsdorf ended the suspense early in overtime.

"Certainly we need to play with a little more focus if we want to come out on top tomorrow," Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn said.

James Holloway recorded five saves for the Bulldogs (12-12).

Notre Dame, the No. 2 seed, will face No. 3 seed Hillsboro at 7 p.m. today.

Perryville posted a 2-0 victory against Sikeston to advance to the semifinals. The Pirates will play top-seeded Farmington at 5 p.m. today.

Class 1 District 1

Mark Buerck scored three goals and Taylor Johnson added two as Saxony Lutheran waltzed past Hancock 10-0 in their opener.

Saxony led 9-0 by halftime as it improved to 17-4. The Crusaders will face Bayless at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Gus Klaus, Chad Bachmann, Bret Rodewald, Matt Stueve and Shaun Hadler each added a goal against Hancock. Rodewald recorded four assists, Klaus had two, and Hadler, Spencer Sander, Matt Wills and Logan Sprandel each finished with one.

Stueve and Austin Mickan combined for the shutout.
