The thermite reaction - iron (iii) oxide with aluminum that produces molten iron that drops from a clay pot into a pumpkin was just one of the pyrotechnic demonstrations put on by members of the chemistry department at Southeast Missouri State University on Friday evening October 30. Approximately 150 children between the ages of 5 and 12 came to participate in 16 different science activities and to watch a series of demonstrations that ended with an exploding pumpkin.
